What Does Your Car Insurance Policy Cover?

In North Carolina, all car insurance policies are required by law to include liability insurance and uninsured motorist coverage.  Other coverage options, such as collision and comprehensive coverage, are not required by the state, but are required by lenders if you have financed or are leasing your vehicle. You can expect a typical car insurance policy to include the following:

  1. Liability coverage (required): Pays third-party damages if you cause an accident. Your policy must include at least $30,000/person and $60,000/accident in bodily injury coverage, and at least $25,000 in property damage coverage.
  2. Uninsured motorist coverage (required): Pays for any medical treatment needed by you or your passengers if you are injured in an accident caused by an uninsured, underinsured, or hit-and-run driver. It does not cover damage to your car.
  3. Collision coverage (optional): Pays to repair or replace your car if it is damaged in a collision with another vehicle or a stationary object, or if you overturn your vehicle while making a sharp turn, regardless of fault.
  4. Comprehensive coverage (optional): Pays to repair or replace your vehicle if it is stolen, vandalized, or damaged because of a non-collision event such as a falling object, hurricane, flood, structure fire, or hailstorm.
  5. Roadside assistance and rental car coverage (optional): Covers the cost of assistance and towing if your vehicle becomes disabled while out on the road. Separately, you can purchase coverage for rental car use while your car is being repaired.

If you currently owe more for your vehicle than it is worth, you may want to talk to your insurance agent about how gap insurance can provide an added layer of protection in the event that your vehicle is totaled.
